Chirote, also known as Chiroti, is a popular Indian sweet delicacy. It is a deep-fried pastry that is crispy, flaky, and often served with a dusting of powdered sugar. Here's a simple recipe for Chirote:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (maida)
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) or vegetable oil
- A pinch of salt
- Water, as needed
- Oil for deep frying
- Powdered English Simple Recipes sugar for dusting
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, ghee or vegetable oil, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead to form a smooth and firm dough. The English Simple Recipes dough should not be too soft or sticky.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes.
- After resting, divide the dough into small equal-sized portions and shape them into balls.
- Take a dough ball and roll it out into a thin, rectangular-shaped sheet using a rolling pin. The sheet should be thin enough to see through.
- Apply a little ghee or oil evenly on the rolled sheet.
- Starting from one end, fold the sheet in a pleated manner, similar to folding a paper fan.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
- Heat oil in a deep pan or kadai for deep frying.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully slide a few folded dough sheets into the hot oil and fry them on medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy. Flip them gently to ensure even frying.
- Remove the fried chirote using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
- Repeat the frying process with the remaining folded dough sheets.
- Allow the fried chirote to cool down to room temperature.
- Once cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar over the chirote, making sure to coat them evenly.
- Serve the chirote as a delicious sweet snack or dessert.
Enjoy the crispy and sweet Chirote with a cup of tea or as a festive treat!
