Ven Pongal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Rice: 1 cup
  • Yellow Moong Dal (split yellow gram): 1/4 cup
  • Water: 3 cups
  • Ginger (finely chopped): 1 tablespoon
  • Black Pepper: 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Cashews: 2 tablespoons
  • Curry Leaves: A few
  • Ghee (clarified butter): 2 tablespoons
  • Salt: To taste

Instructions:

  1. Roasting Dal:

    • In a pan, dry Hindi Simple Recipes roast the yellow moong dal on medium heat until it turns slightly golden and gives off a nutty aroma. Set aside.
  2. Preparing Rice and Dal:

    • Wash the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water. Drain well.
  3. Cooking:

    • In a large pot or pressure cooker, add the washed rice and moong dal. Pour in 3 cups of water.
    • Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. If using a pressure cooker, cook on low heat for about 3-4 whistles or until the rice and dal are soft and mushy.
  4. Tempering:

    • Add cumin seeds, black pepper, and finely chopped ginger. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.

  5. Combining:

    • Once the rice and dal are cooked, gently mash them with a spoon to blend well.
    • Add the tempering (ghee, cumin, pepper, ginger, cashews, and curry leaves) to the cooked rice and dal mixture. Mix well.
    • Add salt to taste and stir to combine.
  6. Serving:

    • Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar on the side.

Tips:

  • Consistency: Adjust the water quantity based on your preference for the consistency. More water will give a softer, porridge-like texture, while less water will result in a firmer texture.
  • Spices: You can adjust the quantity of black pepper according to your spice preference. If you like it spicier, you can add a pinch of crushed black pepper or green chilies.
  • Ghee: For a richer flavor, use more ghee as per your taste.
