 Kokum Kadhi – Simple Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 10–12 dried kokum petals (also called amsul)

  • 1 cup thin yogurt (curd)

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 tsp ghee or oil

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • 1/2 tsp sugar (optional)

  • Salt to taste

  • 1–2 green chilies (slit or chopped)

  • Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)


🔪 Instructions:

1. Soak Kokum

Soak the kokum in 1 English Simple Recipes cup warm water for 15–20 minutes. After soaking, gently mash it and strain the liquid. Keep aside.

2. Prepare the Tempering

  • In a pan, heat oil or ghee.

  • Add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.

  • Add asafoetida, turmeric, and red chili powder.

  • Add green chilies and sauté for a few seconds.

3. Make the Kadhi

  • Add the kokum Hindi Simple Recipes water and another cup of water into the pan.

  • Add salt and sugar. Let it come to a light boil for 5–7 minutes.

  • Reduce the Marathi Simple Recipes flame and slowly add whisked yogurt, stirring continuously to avoid curdling.

  • Simmer for 2–3 minutes (do not boil after adding yogurt).

4. Garnish

Turn off the heat. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.


🍽️ Serving Suggestion:

  • Serve hot with steamed rice or drink as a digestive appetizer.

  • It pairs well with plain dal, vegetable stir-fry, or papad.
